Position Summary

The Project Manager develops and delivers landscape architectural services for PHS projects. The Project Manager is a thought-partner to assist in the development of department initiatives and strategies for implementation. The Project Manager supports the Urban Design team by developing landscape designs, permitting and technical documentation, producing renderings and other visual presentations, and performing construction administration. The position works collaboratively with project partners and community groups to plan, design, and construct landscape improvements to a range of projects. The position supports PHS departments and events in matters pertaining to design.

Essential Functions

  • Prepares base plans, site analyses, design concepts, design development, and construction documentation for landscape design projects, including materials necessary for permitting applications.
  • Assists in developing strategies for implementation of major department initiatives and phasing strategies
  • Elevates design and creative thinking
  • Establishes systems and protocols for timely delivery of team responsibilities
  • Researches materials and products, and assembles palettes of landscape materials and furnishings.
  • Develops plant palettes for landscape design projects.
  • Prepares perspective drawings, photo simulations, illustrative plans and elevations, and animations for landscape projects.
  • Prepares cost estimates and specifications for landscape design projects under the supervision of the Director.
  • Reviews bid proposals, compiles bid comparisons and negotiates with potential contractors. Assures contracts are fulfilled within the schedule, budget, quality standards, and specifications through site observation and monitoring during the construction administration phase.
  • Coordinates project administration and documentation by producing clear, accurate and informative meeting agendas and minutes: findings and reports, follow-up plans, and project evaluations.
  • Provides technical assistance related to urban horticulture, landscape design, construction, and maintenance to advocate for responsible and successful techniques and approaches.
  • Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with partners, consultants, contractors, and vendors to assure project goals are realized.
  • Works collaboratively across PHS departments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinates consultants as needed to prepare designs, cost estimates and specifications.  Reviews, edits and approves consultants’ plans, reports and designs for aesthetics, good horticulture and design quality; compliance to City standards; reviews design and construction drawings, cost estimates and specifications for accuracy and completeness. 
  • Meets or exceeds clients’ and/or partners’ expectations by soliciting and translating their needs into appropriate project results.
  • Provides technical assistance, related to urban horticulture and landscape design, and construction.
  • Supervises staff and/or interns as required.
  • Participates in PHS events throughout the year, including the Philadelphia Flower Show.
  • Helps to enlist new and retain existing donors by sharing the benefits of PHS membership with partners, advisors, program participants and others with whom you meet in carrying out your work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills Required:

Experience, and Skills Required

  • Minimum 3 years experience in a landscape architectural firm, with proficiency in site analysis, design, grading, construction detailing and construction administration.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, AutoCAD, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Mandatory proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and AutoCAD. Proficiency in Google Sketch Up and LandFX a plus.
  • Excellent knowledge of landscape architectural and horticultural practices
  • Construction administration experience
  • Ability managing multiple projects while adhering to deadlines
  • Experience working on parks and Green Stormwater Infrastructure preferred
  • Experience managing professional consultants
  • Creative and organized
  • Excellent written, graphic and verbal communication
  • Solid decision-making ability
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Graphic skills and ability to produce small scale design packages
  • Ability to work successfully with clients, partners, and community groups
  • Ability to identify problems and propose solutions
  • Interest in new products and trends
  • PA driver’s license
Education Requirements:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture or closely related field
