Description:

Penn State’s Department of Landscape Architecture is undergoing a period of forward-looking change based on our mission: "Inspired work grounded in environmental and social good." We seek three new tenure-line faculty at the assistant or associate levels to aid in carrying this mission forward.

With that mission as a foundation, we recently refined our BLA curriculum to enhance environmental and social content as well as provide greater curricular flexibility and opportunity. Additionally, we established an online MPS in Geodesign; created a center-in-development, E+D: Ecology plus Design; and are currently refining our MLA and MSinLA.  We are now positioned to welcome three new faculty at the assistant or associate level who will enthusiastically embrace our mission and contribute to the next phase of forward-looking change by providing outstanding teaching in three areas of curricular need:  Professional Practice, Beginning Design, and Visual Communications; and by undertaking significant research/creative activity that aligns with our mission.

Penn State Landscape Architecture resides in the Stuckeman School, which also houses Architecture and Graphic Design.  Generous endowments support a number of Chairs and Professorships for full professors, as well as a Career Development Professor in Design for early-career faculty, and two large grants that provide significant opportunities for professional development to early- or mid-career faculty.  The endowments also provide generous funding for faculty travel, visiting critics, lectures and exhibitions, research assistants, and course enhancement funds.  As well, endowments support two centers within our School: the Hamer Center for Community Design and the Stuckeman Center for Design Computing.

For more information on our department and our context, explore the following websites: our department (http://stuckeman.psu.edu/larch), our Geodesign program (https://geodesign.psu.edu/), our School (http://stuckeman.psu.edu) and our College of Arts and Architecture (https://artsandarchitecture.psu.edu/).

Penn State is an internationally highly-ranked Tier 1 research institution and a land grant university. State College/University Park (42,000 residents/50,000 students) is a delightful small city located in a central Pennsylvania rural valley of beautiful farmland amidst wooded mountains; yet Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and New York City can each be reached in a four-hour drive or less.

To apply, submit a letter that includes a statement of interest in teaching specific topical areas listed above, and what you bring to each; a brief description of creative and/or research achievements; a curriculum vitae; representative samples of research and/or creative works; and names of three references.  All of these materials must be submitted via Penn State’s Electronic Jobs Management System (EJMS): https://psu.jobs, job #82244. For full consideration, submissions must be received by November 15, 2018; review will begin immediately thereafter and continue until suitable candidates are found.  Please direct any questions to Bonj Szczygiel, Chair Faculty Search Committee:  [email protected] or 814-863-8596.

Penn State is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, committed to providing employment opportunities to minorities, women, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and other protected groups.  To review the Annual Security Report which contains information about crime statistics and other safety matters and policies, please go to http://police.psu.edu/annual-security-reports, which will explain how to request a paper copy of the Annual Security Report.
